Cala d´Or (Golden Cove) is part of the municipal district of Santanyí which is located on the southern half Mallorca’s east coast. It has evolved from a relatively unknown local fishing village into one of the most important tourist resorts on the island.

Its unmistakable charms were discovered by a group of avant-garde artists who settled here in the 1930s. Soon after their arrival, the word spread and Cala d’Or took off. It became the perfect place for a relaxing seaside vacation or if possible to invest in a holiday home.

The small village and harbour are located in one of the many rocky coves with sandy beaches (calas) that you’ll find all over Mallorca’s east coast. The resort itself has spread out over several of these coves.

Nowadays, Cala d’Or is packed with attractive hotels, apartment blocks and villas. It’s a lot more chic and stylish than some of the other resorts on the island. Also, most of the establishments cater extremely well for children, making it a very popular family resort. Most hotels offer full entertainment programmes for children, and there are trampolines and mini go-karts at Mallorcalandia. There’s also a mini-golf in the town centre.

You’ll find many smaller resorts and quaint little villages spread all along the south eastern coastline and there’s a very good bus service connecting them. Some places well worth checking out include; Cala Egos, Cala Santanyi, Cala Figuera, Cala Figuera, Cala Llombarts, Puerto Petro, Sa Colonia de Sant Jordi or the isle of Cabrera.

Also worth a visit, is the Cala d’Or marina. It’s located in the heart of the east coast resort are and attracts “trendy” yachting types.

Cala d’Or has no shortage of beaches. There are seven in total, all with fine white sands and crystal clear waters. The larger ones offer a wide range of sports facilities including; sailing, windsurfing and scuba-diving.

If this seems a bit too energetic you could always take a cruise along the coastline or ride a mini-train to picturesque Cala Mondrago with its two spectacular coves.

Traditionally, the nightlife here has generally been hotel based and family focussed. Although, in recent years an increasing number of lively bars have opened; most of which are centred around the pedestrian zone. That said, Cala d´Or still remains a low key resort aimed at families and those looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.
